There are a number of regions in Georgia that have been home to major civil unrest in recent times – the breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are to be avoided, as are the border regions around Chechnya, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Kabarda-Balkar and Karachay-Cherkessia, as landmines and kidnappings are common. The Pankisi Gorge area north of Akhmeta should also be avoided, as this region is where an international counter-terrorism operation is currently being carried out. All of these areas should not be visited as they present real dangers to foreigners. Travelling alone in Georgia is not recommended – though general stability has returned to the country, levels of street crime and kidnapping are still relatively high and whilst major cities are generally safe, precautions are advised. Immunisation against poliomyelitis and typhoid is sometimes advised. Water used for drinking, making ice cubes or brushing teeth should first be sterilised in some manner. Fruit should be peeled before consumption and vegetables should be cooked. Meat should only be eaten well-cooked and hot. Dairy products are considered safe for consumption.
